Driving Marketing and Community Engagement as a Key Organiser of the Farndon Soapbox Derby
FARNDON, UK – Far more than just a spectator, the team at Spectra Media played an instrumental role in the triumphant success of the Farndon Soapbox Derby, which took place on Sunday, the 14th of September.
As a key member of the organising committee, with Managing Director Sam Spridgeon at the helm of the marketing efforts, the agency’s expertise was critical in transforming the event from a local race into a spectacular and highly publicised community fundraiser. The derby successfully raised crucial funds for the Hospice of The Good Shepherd and other vital local causes, thanks in no small part to the strategic and creative efforts of the Spectra Media team.

What is The Farndon Soapbox Derby?
More than just a race.
The Farndon Soapbox Derby is a beloved community event that happens in Farndon, Cheshire, where creativity and camaraderie are celebrated through thrilling, gravity-powered kart races. Organised by local volunteers like Tim Kenney, Pete Goddard and more, the derby raises much-needed funds for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd and supports other community projects.
And this year, the derby reached new heights with more participants, volunteers and attendees. Together with Spectra’s involvement that extended far beyond a simple sponsorship, the team were on the ground, helping to ensure the event was a success. Sam commented on the team’s involvement, saying,
“Being a part of the organising committee for the Farndon Soapbox Derby was brilliant. Our goal was to leverage our marketing and event management expertise to help make this the most successful derby yet. We know that the Hospice of The Good Shepherd relies on events like this to continue their incredible work, and we wanted to ensure we helped them raise as much as possible. The energy of the day, the ingenuity of the racers, and the unwavering support of the community were all sound. We’re incredibly proud of the whole team’s efforts and thankful to our loved ones who helped us.”

The Spectra Media team’s contributions were diverse and impactful. The whole team, including Operations Director John Wylde and Agency Lead Yuki Chin, were instrumental. From developing and designing a new website to sponsor relations and handling social media, the team helped manage the organisation of this event. During the day, whilst Sam oversaw the erection of banners, everyone ensured the event layout was both visually appealing and functional. On the other hand, Yuki’s role extended to being one of the event photographers was crucial, as she captured high-quality images that have since been used across social media and websites to showcase the event’s success and spirit. The team’s proactive approach, setting up early in the morning, ensured that everything was ready for the arrival of the crowds and the official start of the races.
Another key highlight of the day was Sam’s role as the host of the VIP section, where he personally greeted and welcomed Gold Sponsors and their guests whose generous contributions were so essential to the event’s success. This provided an opportunity for him to build rapport and thank the companies like Ellis & Co, Moneytree Wealth Management, Northwest Contractors, Daulby Read, Demon Tweeks, Rickitts Partnership and more. Here, he also managed the distribution of food vouchers for the local pub, The Hare, and ensured the sponsors and their guests were well looked after. This direct, personal engagement with key stakeholders underscored Spectra Media’s commitment to building strong, lasting relationships and its understanding of the importance of partnership in community projects.

The success of the Farndon Soapbox Derby is a testament to the entire community coming together. The funds raised will directly support the Hospice of The Good Shepherd in providing compassionate and professional palliative care for people with life-limiting conditions, a mission that resonates deeply with the entire Spectra Media team. Reflecting on the day, Yuki said, “It was amazing to be on the ground, not just as a part of the team, but also as the one documenting all the incredible moments. Even though the weather was torrential, you could still feel the excitement from everyone, from the racers to the spectators. And seeing the results of everyone’s efforts, like the large crowds and the media attention, is incredibly rewarding.”
On the whole, the involvement of Spectra Media in the event went far beyond professional duties. It was a deeply personal commitment to a cause they believed in. By lending their expertise, they not only helped raise crucial funds but also demonstrated their brand as a creative, community-minded and highly effective agency. Their work on the derby serves as a powerful case study in how strategic marketing can amplify the impact of local charitable initiatives.
